Purdy's Vintage Hair Salon

Last week I visited Purdy's hair salon after finding it in a Google search for vintage hairdressers in Sheffield. I've wanted to go to a retro salon for a long time and I know that there are a few in Manchester, but I didn't know about this hidden gem in Kelham Arcade. Purdy's is a 1950s dream. With its pastel colours, kitsch decorations, vintage hairbrushes and pink Smeg fridge, there was nothing I didn't love about it. I couldn't stop myself from smiling the whole time I was there.

The decor was only half of it, though. Jane was a fabulous hairdresser and she put me at ease straight away, so that classic 'new salon' anxiety was nowhere to be seen. I had a long, thorough hair-wash (the proper head massage kind, not just a sort of shampoo tickle) and my uneven layers were trimmed and re-shaped. Then came the blow-dry. I don't think there is anything more wonderful than having your hair washed and dried professionally. It made me feel a million times better and my hair seemed thicker and healthier than ever. I couldn't stop myself from touching it for the rest of the day. I honestly cannot recommend this salon enough for its beautiful interior and the quality of the hairdressing. I'll definitely be going back - maybe for a vintage up-do or victory rolls next time.
